تَسْتَمِعُونَ إِلَى كِتَابِ عَبْقَرِيَّةِ الصِّدِّيقِ تَأْلِيفِ عَبَّاسِ مَحْمُودٍ الْعَقَّادِ بِصَوْتِ إِسْلَامِ عَادِلٍ

تَقْدِيمٌ

Introduction

فِي تَقْدِيمِ كِتَابِي هَذَا عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ أَقُولُ مَا قُلْتُهُ فِي عَبْقَرِيَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَبْقَرِيَّةِ عُمَرَ وَكُلِّ كِتَابٍ مِنْ هَذَا الْقَبِيلِ

In the introduction to this book of mine about Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, I say what I have said in 'The Genius of Muhammad', 'The Genius of Omar', and every book of this kind.

وَفَحْوَاهُ أَنَّنِي لَا أَكْتُبُ تَرْجَمَةً لِلصِّدِّيقِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَلَا أَكْتُبُ تَارِيخًا لِخِلَافَتِهِ وَحَوَادِثِ عَصْرِهِ

Its essence is that I am not writing a biography of Al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him), nor am I writing a history of his caliphate and the events of his era.

وَلَا أَعْنَى بِالْوَقَائِعِ مِنْ حَيْثُ هِيَ وَقَائِعُ وَلَا بِالْأَخْبَارِ مِنْ حَيْثُ هِيَ أَخْبَارٌ

I am not concerned with the occurrences as they are mere occurrences, nor with the news as it is mere news.

هَذِهِ مَوْضُوعَاتٌ لَمْ أَقْصِدْهَا وَلَمْ أَذْكُرْ فِي عَنَاوِينِ الْكُتُبِ مَا يَعِدُ الْقَارِئَ بِهَا وَيُوَجِّهُ اسْتِطْلَاعَهُ إِلَيْهَا

These are subjects that I did not intend, and I did not mention in the titles of the books what promises the reader them or directs his interest toward them.

وَلَكِنَّمَا قَصَدْتُ أَنْ أَرْسُمَ لِلصِّدِّيقِ صُورَةً نَفْسِيَّةً

But I intended to draw a psychological portrait of Al-Siddiq.

تُعَرِّفُنَا بِهِ وَتُجَلِّي لَنَا خَلَائِقَهُ وَبَوَاعِثَ أَعْمَالِهِ

That makes us know him and clarifies for us his character and the motives for his actions.

كَمَا تُجَلِّي الصُّورَةُ مَلَامِحَ مَنْ تَرَاهُ بِالْعَيْنِ

Just as a picture clarifies the features of someone you see with your eye.

فَلَا تَعْنِينَا الْوَقَائِعُ وَالْأَخْبَارُ إِلَّا بِمِقْدَارِ مَا تُؤَدِّي أَدَاءَهَا فِي هَذَا الْمَقْصِدِ

So, occurrences and news do not concern us except to the extent that they fulfill their role in this purpose.
