كَانَتِ الْغَابَةُ قَدْ بَدَأَتْ تَكْتَسِي بِالظَّلَامِ مِنْ حَوْلِهِمْ عِنْدَمَا قَالَ جَارْد بِإِلْحَاحٍ يَجْدُرُ بِنَا أَنْ نَعُودَ طَالَمَا أَنَّنَا وَجَدْنَا الْهَمَجَ مَوْتَى

The forest was starting to darken around them when Gared said insistently, 'We should return while we have found the wildlings dead.'

بَادَرَهُ السَّيِّدُ وَايْمَار رُوِيس قَائِلًا بِابْتِسَامَةٍ سَاخِرَةٍ خَفِيفَةٍ جِدًّا، وَهَلْ يُجَرِّدُكَ الْمَوْتَى مِنْ رُجُولَتِكَ؟

Ser Waymar Royce initiated him with a very faint, mocking smile: 'And does death strip you of your manhood?'

لَمْ يَسْمَحْ جَارْد لِنَفْسِهِ بِابْتِلَاعِ الطُّعْمِ، كَانَ كَبِيرًا فِي السِّنِّ تَجَاوَزَ الْخَمْسِينَ مِنْ عُمْرِهِ،

Gared did not let himself take the bait; he was old, past fifty,

وَكَثِيرًا مَا رَأَى أَمْثَالَ هَذَا اللَّوْرْد الصَّغِيرِ يَأْتُونَ وَيَذْهَبُونَ، فَقَالَ الْمَيِّتُ مَيِّتٌ وَانْتَهَى أَمْرُهُ،

and he had often seen the likes of this young lord come and go, so he said, 'The dead are dead and that is the end of it.'

لَكِنْ لَا شَأْنَ لَنَا بِصُحْبَةِ الْمَوْتَى.

But we have no business with the company of the dead.

سَأَلَهُ رُوِيس بِهُدُوءٍ، وَهَلْ هُمْ مَوْتَى حَقًّا؟

Royce asked him quietly, 'And are they truly dead?'

هَلْ لَدَيْنَا دَلِيلٌ عَلَى هَذَا؟

Do we have proof of this?

أَجَابَ جَارْد، وَيْل رَآهُمْ، وَإِذَا قَالَ إِنَّهُمْ مَوْتَى فَهَذَا دَلِيلٌ يَكْفِينِي،

Gared replied, 'Will saw them, and if he says they are dead, that is proof enough for me.'
